Hurray For The Freedom Fighter!

Hurray for the freedom fighter

Of the hungry masses

He has freed his own pockets

From the bondage of poverty

Freed his children’s children’s children

From the bondage of hunger

But I – where is my freedom?

Hurray for the freedom fighter

His future is cast in stone

Solid like the Rock of Gibraltar

Built rich and magnificent

Like a tourist’s dream

But I – where is my future?

Hurray for the freedom fighter

Marrying the thieves at night

Crocodile tears in the day

Eavesdropping and you hear concealed laughter

Booming from the enclave of the gods

But I – where is my laughter?

Hurray for the freedom fighter

Of the wretched masses

Oil stoking his embers

Into the flames of a dangerous Sheik

The Sheik of an unfortunate clan

Where a pint of oil

Now sells for a barrel of blood

His dreams like a mythical Octopus

With multiple wings soaring higher and higher

Beyond the reach of his masses

I am the despoiled masses

My blood is drilled every day

From the creeks of the Niger delta

But I – where are my wings?

Hurray for the freedom fighter

Fighting for Africa

The great land of the black race

Poverty like an ever encroaching Sahara

Eating up his selfish brain

His delight is the cozy greatness built

With the blood of the unfortunate

I am Africa

I am the great continent of the blacks

But I – where is my delight?

Africa O Africa

Africa O Africa!

Still slumbering away

When it’s already noon

Your children daily fleeing

To dance to other tunes

See all your promising fruits

Flying off to ripe another man’s land.

Africa O Africa!

How long shall your adult

Continue to be infants

Spoon fed by those who stole your glory

Manufactured into killing fantasies

So we would pay the prize of foolery?

Africa O Africa!

A strange thing has happened

You have given birth

To babies with teeth

Now they drill your blood

This blood screaming and wailing

With tears of vengeance.

Africa O Africa!

When the drum of war is beaten

They no longer rise to dance

The prize for the brave

Is now the certainty of grave

For the gods favour no more the strong

But the weak in conscience.

Africa O Africa!

Your neighbours love you not

They ask for more by giving

And if I raise up my fists in angst

My brother raises his fists

Descending they turn AK47s

Sent by the death merchants of Europe.

Africa O Africa!

Eating crumbs of flying time

See their ever roving satellite

Taking images of starving Somalians

See my eyes overflowing

With tears of generational woes

Africa O Africa!

Your once rich and boisterous life fields

Are turned into battle fields

Your able men turned specimens

Whenever the powers test their magic

In fratricidal bloody duels.

Africa O Africa!

Richer far more than gold

Poorer than a church rat

And those who dared not look on your face

Now daily spit on your head .

Africa O Africa!

Like a woman raped

By her own children

Who will appease the ancestors

And cleanse us of this abomination?
